One major point which nearly everyone on all sides of the gun debate is ignoring is the simple fact that most Americans don't own a gun. In fact, only 3% of Americans own nearly half of all the guns in this country. [1] [2]
And not only does a small minority own a vast arsenal of weapons, even the absolute number of people who own any guns at all is estimated to be around 30%, a number which is dropping every day. [3] As such, from these statistics we can ascertain that only a minority of Americans own guns, and that an even smaller (and likely richer) minority owns the lion share of these guns.
These facts completely shatter the main reason why many gun owners claim to own their guns for, self-defense. After all, if only a small minority of Americans has access to guns, then how are these guns beneficial to anyone besides a privileged minority?
As such the solution to this problem is clear, giving out guns to every American household for free. Of course, those who don't pass basic background checks or safety courses shouldn't be getting guns either, but beyond that everyone should be able to obtain a firearm for free. With the current military budget is slated to be over $700 billion dollars the US government surely has more than enough money to provide these guns to the people if it so desired. [4]
However, the fact is that history has proven how Republicans and the right fear arming the poor, such as in the case of the Black Panthers whose guns were restricted by Ronald Reagan. [5] From this we can drawn our final conclusion, that right wing gun owners are nothing more than hypocrites who wish to hoard all the weapons for themselves, while refusing to let the poor be armed. If gun owners really want to see America be protected with guns, then they should try sharing their massive arsenals with the people.

Should we give guns to children, dangerous criminals, or severely mentally ill people?
While I don't have a problem with sane people owning some guns, I don't think that either the second amendment in the American constitution or the fact that rich Americans own a lot of guns, means that we should throw out common sense about guns. I don't know how logistically possible it would be to get all the hundreds of millions of Americans gun checks and safety and have a huge free gun fest at the same time. Some people will fall through the cracks.
